According to many rumors, Nintendo would publish new versions of the very popular Switch, so it was not scandalous as the Japanese giant announced the Switch Lite earlier this year. Anyway, what is the use of a switch that does not change? What is this thing? I took a lot of long trips to discover it.
The 3DS is old. Super old. Nintendo has more than a million reasons to stay on the laptop market, especially with the impressive launch of Apple Arcade by Apple. The Switch Lite is attempting to expand the attraction of the Switch brand and attract some of the 75 million 3DS owners to another cycle.
The original switch material was what I would consider assez laptop . This is suitable for most bags, but it s a bit tricky. Will I remove this thing one day and find the bad jewelers? Or the famous famous striped screen beyond recognition? Switch Lite meets all these concerns with mixed results. The surface material is a beautiful soft texture and the whole is much lighter. The arrangement of the buttons is improved thanks to a real directional pavement, with (to me) an identical spacing. The adherent texture makes the thing easier to hold for me. That said, if you have trouble holding the original material, you will find yourself in a similar boat. Do I feel like I m 9 years old with my incredibly turquoise switch in hand? Oh yes. Fortunately, durability seems rather good overall. I would have no problem slipping my little turquoise brick into a backpack. Heck, on a flight, another passenger trampled straight in the air - no problem (for the memory, my file pocket has no background, because ... airlines).
Also, no problem - manipulate more sturdy games for a long time. How long? With the maximum brightness screen, Breath of the Wild clung for less than three and a half hours. The original switch fails to handle this length, it is impossible to stop before 3 hours, even when the brightness of the screen is lower than the light. Less demanding titles, such as Cuphead or Dead Cells, can occupy almost a transcontinental trip. If you end up missing from Juice, Switch Lite seems much less picky on what will load it. Obviously, you should always use the Nintendo brick and cable, but if you needed it, just about every USB port that I tried worked well.
The screen itself is slightly smaller than the switch, but becomes much brighter and also seems to improve black levels. All I tried during a comparison between A and B of the SNES titles in Mario Odyssey was beautiful on the Lite Switch. The bright and saturated whites lend themselves extremely well to the kind of games you are likely to play on a Nintendo platform. The pixel density is slightly higher because the resolution of the screen is unchanged. Unfortunately, a smaller screen also means physically smaller text. The things that made me ladle in the past have become fundamentally unreadable. Fire Emblem is quite difficult to follow without being unable to see the text - who loves flowers, again? It would be nice to see Nintendo develop accessibility guidelines to solve this kind of problem. Oh, I m sure I could see the text if I burn my TV ... Oh. Law. The Lite Switch does not change (and there is no crutch).
If this were the case, the Lite switch would easily be my preference switch and recommendation. But this is not the case. So, consider this as a conditional recommendation. Yes, you might have only 2 things, but the Nintendo cloud backup system is exasperating. You can make a cloud backup, but all this is manual and the settings are buried in the settings. Even then, it s a bit superficial. I had several cases where backup data I had specifically extracted on the Switch Lite had disappeared, even without touching my anchored switch. It s bizarre and behavior is anything but predictable. In short: Keep yourself in a single switch if you can.
Also remember that you can not literally associate this thing with an external screen. For me, it is a business breaker for regular use. I love the professional controller, and most often, I need to do a game capture. It s extremely frustrating. It is undeniably the best switching material to date, but its limits are a real tragedy. If you do not care to play on a sofa, or if you want to give a switch to your children, or if you travel so much that you live in a suitcase, the Switch Lite is a durable and well-designed material, and a real pleasure use. But if Nintendo could just create the SWITCH LITE form factor with a host capacity and an OLED screen ... Well. I will continue to dream.
